Artist Statement
My work consists of exaggerated amalgamated forms which are animal hybrids mushed together of either the same or different species. I use a lot of bold and bright colors across a variety of medias such as watercolor, fur, and different types of fabric. In my practice, color is essential to convey specific emotions. Within the last few months, my work has comprised of realism and stills from my everyday experiences. The main subject has been my cat Abby and moments where time froze. These snapshots embraced the present, were timeless, and gave the impression that nothing else mattered. Previously I’ve also explored subjects such as cannibalism and decay.
A current project I’m exploring takes a different approach than my previous work. I’m creating a series of work that dives into the process of growing older and leaving home. This series is to be dedicated to the intensities of human emotion through exaggerated contortions of animals associated with those sentiments. I’m pushing it a step further by incorporating a narrative that takes the shape of a spiral. Some corresponding elements that will be presented within the work are post-apocalyptic themes, overgrown plants, and imagery associated with leaving your heart behind in your childhood home to pursue your aspirations as an adult.
Artists that inspire me to create my work are Kacie Lynn, Beth Cavener, Dan Huston, and Dusty Ray. The work I create is a way for me decompress and process emotions. It’s a way for me to let go of what I’m holding on to so I can move onto the next thing. I like to think about it as “a moment stuck in time.”
